Visa Formalities for Nepal
Getting a visa for Nepal is a straightforward process. Here are the steps you need to follow:
Online Application: You can apply for a Nepal visa online up to 15 days in advance of your arrival1. To do this, you need to fill out the Online Visa Application form on the official website of the Department of Immigration of Nepal2. You will need a valid passport, a recent digital photograph (size: 1.5” x 1.5”), a detailed permanent residence address, and a detailed address in Nepal2. After submission, a receipt will be sent to your email. Print the receipt and keep it with you as you need to produce it before the Immigration Authority2.
Visa on Arrival: Alternatively, you can obtain a Visa on Arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or any border3. The ‘On Arrival’ visa procedure is quick and simple4. You can expect some queues during peak tourist season4. If you wish to skip those queues, you can also consider getting a visa from Nepalese Diplomatic Missions stationed abroad prior to your arrival4.
Payment: Make payment at the bank according to your visa requirement (15/30/90 Days). Get the receipt. While you can use different modes of payments, carrying some cash is advised4. The visa fees are as follows:
15 Days – 30 USD
30 Days – 50 USD
90 Days – 125 USD
Visa Processing: Proceed to the Immigration Desk with your online form, payment receipts, and your passport. Hand in your documents to the immigration officer for visa processing4.
Please note that if you are visiting Nepal for purposes other than Tourism (sightseeing, tour, travel, mountaineering, trekking, visiting friends and families), you should still get a ‘Tourist Visa’ to get into the country4. However, you must change the category of visa as per your purpose and length of stay in Nepal from the Department of Immigration by producing required documents4.
Nationals of certain countries are requested to acquire a visa prior to their arrival from their nearby Diplomatic missions (Embassies/consulates) of the Nepal Government4. These countries include Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Cameroon, Somalia, Liberia, Ethiopia, Iraq, Palestine, Afghanistan, and Syria4.
